Is Bob’s Big Boy still around? I used to love those hot fudge brownies and grilled cheese sandwiches. I would get a job there now if it meant I could relive my childhood.

I miss the big hug-able statues out front. I remember as a kid running up to hug Big Boy every time we visited and my parents taking pictures. I didn’t know they are bringing it back. Thanks for the tip, Bk! (BTW, you can buy Bob’s Big Boy salad dressing in the refrigerated produce section at most grocery stores.)

Update: Here are the current California locations…

Irvine resident to launch a Bob’s Big Boy
Irvine resident and Baja Fresh franchisee Philip MacDonald is planning to build a Bob’s Big Boy in Pasadena. The diner would mirror the retro look of the 1949 Bob’s in Burbank.

Here’s a couple of pictures of the one in Burbank.

The Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant located at 4211 Riverside Drive in Burbank, California is the oldest remaining Bob’s Big Boy in the United States. Built in 1949 by local residents Scott MacDonald and Ward Albert, it was designed by noted Los Angeles architect Wayne McAllister, “incorporating the 1940s transitional design of streamline modern style, while anticipating the freeform 50’s coffee shop architecture. The towering Bob’s sign is an integral part of the building design and its most prominent feature.” The building is said to have “made McAllister’s reputation,” and he is credited with creating the restaurant’s circular drive-through design.

They better chain down the fiberglass statue. High school prangsters love to relocate this icon to their school gym roof before a homecoming game.

It looks like the Orange location is new. Fast Food Maven from the OCR wrote about it last December… said it was set to open this spring. So, it must have just opened. I know where I’m going for lunch this weekend!
From the article mentioned above:
“The company, which has 11 restaurants in California, is scouting more places to open in Orange and Los Angeles counties, Knitter said. New locations have not been disclosed, but Southern California is a key area for new eateries…”
(I’m going to bounce part of this thread to Dining. I think others would like to know about it.)

I wrote about nostalgia sometime ago and these iconic businesses are making a come back. Back then the kids who are now parents want their children to have a similar experience.
I worked with a client who worked for Bob’s Big Boy, Sambos, and Tiny Naylor. He told me once the statue got stolen quite often and forced him to relocate it to the roof.

The big commotion was kids being able to touch it and climb it. During the 70’s families took photos of their family outings and posing with the statue was the thing to do with those aweful Kodak cameras with the plug in cube flash.
I am glad to see Big Boys return.

We pulled it off in the mid-80s at our SGV-area high school. It was stunning achievement.

Thank you validating my comment. Which high school was it?
San Gabriel, Mission, Del Mar, Temple City, Alhambra, Mark Keppel or Schurr?

During the 20’s Wayne McAllister won a Aqua Caliente Hotel Commission collaborating with a moonlighting top female designer from a competition firm. The boss of the female designer was not happy and he fired her. The boss was also on the board of architectural examiner and never passed Wayne on his exams.
Wayne never became an architect but a designer who created the most iconic Googie architecture of our pop culture during the 40’s-50’s.
He married the female designer and got married in Santa Ana and resided in Floral Park for a while before moving to his permanent home in Pasadena/Arcadia.
He designed many of the early hotels in Vegas along the Strip.

This is actually tickling my memory banks. I know there was seafood place in that area (the name escapes me, Cannery something) but I’m trying to remember if there was a Bob’s there too.

Does anyone else remember the All-You-Can-Eat fried fish dinner on Fridays at Big Boy’s? With hush puppies? That is an old but fond memory. I was a child then and my parents were still married.

It looks like they’ve changed their menu some. This is from the BOB’s BIG BOY in Burbank.

North and northwest of those areas. Trying to preserve some anonymity..at one time this high school was an architectural landmark. Really bad riots in the early 70s. Has an animal for a mascot.

I dined at the Diamond Bar location a few times.
Though I grew up in the 80’s with all the burger commercials, I was more of a fish sandwich person back then and rarely went to places like In and Out and Bob’s Big Boys. It wasn’t until I was in college that I started eating at In and Out.
