tmare - 10 November 2009 11:07 PM MojoJD - 10 November 2009 10:33 PM Fact: your worrying and stress in the process of obtaining the H1N1 vaccine will be far worse than just forgetting about it and taking a dayquil when you get the H1N1 sniffles.
Once again, tell that to the families of the 8 people who died last week in Orange County. One is the father of a child at a local private school near my house. 50% of the school is reportedly out with H1N1.
One thing you can do to help is to make sure all your family gets enough sleep. Sleeping is when your body replenishes the immune system. If you get enough sleep, that will help your body’s immune system to be ready to fight off any illness (H1N1, flu, cold, whatever) better.

The difference is that normal seasonal flu primarily kills the old and the weak.
pig flu is getting the young.
its a bigger story, because it has more impact since it is unusual.

Recalculating the Tally in Swine Flu Deaths
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/11/health/11flu.html?_r=2&ref=health
About 4,000 Americans — rather than about 1,200 — have died of swine flu since the disease emerged in April, according to new figures being calculated by epidemiologists for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

MojoJD is right according to our kids’ doc and the doc at Urgent Care.
Consider this, normal flu has a death toll of 36,000 every year (cite: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/us_flu-related_deaths.htm) and there is approximately 307,911,574 people in the US (cite: http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html) so percentage wise, the number is very small. Even if it’s 4000 from H1N1, that’s only 1% of the normal flu.
Like freedomCM is saying, the reason why it’s getting more news is more people are catching it (hardly anyone has immunity to it) and people who usually don’t die from the normal flu are. Is it more deadly than the normal flu? Not necessarily, but I think in this day and age of “Oh… it’s only the flu” people are careless with treatment and then complications arise from it. Would it be better to get vaccinated and not get it? Of course… so by all means… get the vaccine. But if you do get the flu, it’s not the end of the world.
Just monitor the symptoms, practice proper temperature control, drink plenty of fluids, get lots of rest… and you should get through this. I do know someone who is in the hospital because of pneumonia that resulted from the flu, but I also know at least 3 positive cases of H1N1 that are fine now.

I agree that this flu season is looking not so bad, but if you want to know what people are afraid of check out the 1918 flu.
It infected about 1/3rd of the world’s population and killed about 10% of those infected. In many areas, it came in three waves, the initial wave was not very deadly, typical of seasonal flu. Some mutation/selection occurred after the first wave, and the second wave was much more deadly.
A second scare is the H5N1 “bird flu”, which is killing 60% of those infected (see http://www.wpro.who.int/NR/rdonlyres/7549914F-5C83-4418-8C20-007ADCC07C61/0/s3.jpg). Except for a handful of cases, this virus has only been transmitted from birds to humans, and only about 500 people have come down with it. However, it seems inevitable that it will eventually mutate and achieve human to human transmission.
When that happens, I’m moving to the hills and becoming a hermit. This year’s H1N1 virus demonstrated that we still cannot produce adequate vaccine supplies to protect the population, even with 6 months notice.

and even if we could produce enough (which we should be able to in 2-3 yrs as synthetic production comes online), half of the people would refuse to get it.
darwinism at work, i guess.
and it might solve the traffic problems too.

I can confirm that Seaview Pediatrics has received their H1N1 vaccine shipment and will have a clinic open to all this Saturday. Call the number in Cameray’s post or use G-To-The-Oogle (they have offices in Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo and San Clemente).

MojoJD - 12 November 2009 07:28 PM Hey, we all die some day. I just hope I go out in a bare-knuckle fight with a grizzly bear.
Sounds painful.
I’d rather go out in my sleep… painlessly… right after I get to say goodbye to anyone who matters in my life.

Well… I’m still here… and so is the rest of my family so it looks like it’s survivable. It does seem to leave you with a nagging cough that I just recently got over.
We never got the test to actually confirm it was H1N1, but people I know who I’ve had contact with did so either they got it from me or vice versa or I just had the regular flu. But based on how it spread through my whole family and what our pediatrician said, it is a good chance we were swined.
