The restaurant was originally set to open Oct. 19 at the Shops at Mission Viejo. That date got moved back twice with Oct. 28 being the last date publicized by the ice cream parlour.

Farrell’s co-owner Mike Fleming said he should have a new opening date by Friday.

Farrell’s Ice Cream opens Wednesday

After a few minor delays, Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour will make its Orange County return Wednesday in Mission Viejo.

It’s been at least two decades since the last Farrell’s operated in Orange County. Anticipation for the opening of the old-fashioned soda fountain has been so high, it may be hard to get a table. Large parties have already booked reservations through mid-November, according to the restaurant’s answering machine.

As a result, Farrell’s won’t take reservations for parties of 8 to 12 until after Nov. 15.  Bookings for larger parties (20 to 45 people) won’t be available until January, the restaurant said.

I’m gonna go there the week after next after I finish up the home inspection for one of my buyers in Laguna Niguel.

Perfect location…right around the corner from Mission Hospital.

“Come on down to Farrell’s! Eat the Zoo and have a heart attack or two!”

Great idea…I’m gonna e-mail the site.  But Adam did take down that one San Francisco Ice Cream (kitchen sink) challenge.

I always thought the zoo was for a kids’ party, but I could be wrong.  What is the name of the dish you had to shout “Iggy wiggy, I’m a piggy!” if you finished it all?

Anyone recall the original one on Rosemead Blvd?  Growing up, we went to the one at Cerritos Mall.

Growing up in Temple City/Arcadia, I went to the Farrell’s that used to be on Rosemead Blvd in Rosemead.  They close down ages ago.  I remember the mountain sized bowls of ice cream.

Was there a long wait? I’m thinking of going this weekend but I’m worried it will be insanely crowded.

I stopped by for a late lunch around 2pm on Thursday and it was a 1/2 hour wait. I was on my lunch hour so I went elsewhere.

I would advise staying away this weekend and waiting ‘til the hoopla dies down.

I take back my last statement…

I went to Farrell’s around 6:30 tonight (my 2nd attempt) and got into a line that was 30 people deep. Right as I got into line an employee went around looking for a party of 8. No one budged. The employee left and came around a few minutes later looking for a party of two. Miraculously, there were none. I sheepishly raised my hand and asked, “How about a party of one?” The employee looked my way, pointed, and said, “Follow me!” It was as if the dessert gods were shining down on me, deciding I was the chosen one.

She led me to a small table and I sat down. I was handed a folded paper menu, designed to look like a mini newspaper. My server came a couple of minutes later. She looked to have been in high school, and was very chatty and friendly. I ordered the banana split and a glass of water. We chatted a few minutes and she left to put in my order.

I took in the atmosphere…it was loud, jovial, festive. There was an electronic piano player grinding out old-timey music. Al Jolson was singing in the background. There were whistles, bells ringing, and the famed Farrell’s drum pounding away. I barely settled in when my split arrived. It was smallish. But really, really good. It hit the spot. A bit pricey at $7. After polishing it off in record time, I think I could have gone for the trough, which is 2 banana splits.

Being dinner time, there was a lot of food flying around. Everything looked good, and I look forward to going back and trying a meal.

I took a few pics of the place. I’ll try to post them tomorrow.

I do recommend going if you’re by yourself. The wait was 45 minutes to an hour, so you may get lucky like me and get in a lot quicker.

If you’re on Facebook, be sure to become a fan of their page. They also have a “fan club” that you can sign up for on their site and receive coupons and such: Farrell’s site

Wow, we stopped by on Sat. night to show the kids what it was. There was a 4 HOUR WAIT! A man with a pager said he had been there for 3 hours already. We had better things to do, so we left. Unfortunately, they aren’t setup to host parties yet and the website said they wouldn’t be until March 2010 but that they would love for you to come celebrate your birthday anyway. Our kids bdays are in Dec., but we won’t be attempting to celebrate their birthdays there until next December cause I don’t think birthday fun includes waiting several hours in line.

Good luck if you go.

About 1.5 hour wait.  The drinks are not that good, but ice cream is decent.

No eating establishment can hide from the camera of the IHB Foodie.

Maybe we’ll try to hit it up on a weeknight… I also want to visit the only other Microsoft store in the country.
