I did a quick ride after work yesterday in Peter’s Canyon.  I saw a bobcat or a mountain lion going up the hill around the lake.

It was about the size of what I thought a moutain lion would be, but the fur was much darker than expected.  I called the park ranger and he said they are aware of 2 bobcats living around the area.  They’ll try to see if they can find paw prints. I suppose it was a bobcat, nonetheless it was prety scary, I never climbed the hill as quickly as I did!

I’ve never seen a bobcat the size of a lion.  they have all been about cocker spaniel sized.

lions are lab or shepard sized, minimum, as I read it (thankfully never ran into one).

Well, last Saturday we did the Crusin’ the Conejo 2009 Century…

We had perfect weather, a little cloudy and chilly in the morning and thankfully the sun came out half way up the biggest climb of the Day which came at the 26.1 mile mark.

Here’s a profile of the elevation 6000+ feet of climbing which started around 3 miles after the start…

We fought a fierce headwind part of the way but turned in another direction and enjoyed a welcome 30mph with a sizeable Peleton for about 8 miles which was most welcome.

The ride was very well supported, great food and cold water at every stop, they even had Subway Sandwiches at the last two…

As usual for me on any century, I started getting all grumpy and “over it” the last 5 miles, I just wanted to get off the Bike and get a Burger (Last year I was dreaming of a Steak)...

So anyway, it was a shade under 103 miles, 6000ft of climbing, 8:20 total time.

I deffinately wanna do this ride again next year.

Oh, and to give you some perspective on the toughest climb of the Day, Newport coast drive is 2.4 miles and 900ft, the “Rock Store” Climb is right around 6 miles and of course much steeper, it ramps up to 10% in places….

Dude, the Cookies were awesome!! Probably the reason I burned 8000 calories and gained 4 lbs that Day!!

I didn’t know the Mum’s had baked them though!!

That’s awesome Pete. Well done! Now, about your claim that it’s unusual for you to get grumpy, oh PUHLEEASE! You get grumpy half way around the Back Bay. Did you get your burger?

Wow, sounds like the kind of ride I would be interested in if I were a roadie.  We had the Traverse this past Saturday.  I beat my personal goal time (even though I’d never done it before… I estimated).  It gets HOT and just bleak on a parts of that ride.  All you can think is “another corner and….. ANOTHER INCLINE?!  I THOUGHT I WAS ALMOST DONE!!” for the last couple of hours.  heheh.

congrats.  no way I would ever ride the whole “Pain Divide” in one sitting.  much less race it.

The relentless climb, descent, climb, descent is just demoralizing. 

How much total elevation is there on the Traverse?  What was your time?

8000+ feet is what it says.  My GPS is very good about not “giving” you any free elevation on momentum, and it came out to 8150 or somewhere thereabouts.  I think actual (momentum included) elevation might have been a tad more.

I got 5:24.  Placed 1st in my age group for intermediate.  =-D

I just have to say trabuco is not fun to come down in race environment, having never been on it before.  I endo-d over a couple of boulders on the stream crossing about half way down.  You cant beat a rock to the spine for an end-of-race jolt of life.

My next Century coming up this Saturday, June 13th.

Malibu-Carpenteria-Malibu. Only 1300’ of climbing over 98 miles.

Riding back down the 101 will mean we will have Dolphins to the right and 18 wheelers to the left

I’m thinking if we do it right we can average 17-19 mph, 30 mph is no prob back down the 101 if the wind is in the right direction…there are 15 of us so Team time trial here we come!!
