Suddenly, America digs farming.

Frankly, I blame No_Vas.

So when do we see No_Vas on Huffington Post’s Hot Organic Farmers list?

I think the IHB needs to start lobbying HuffPo for this.  Should I try a petition?

Um, yeah.  That.  From todays LA Times.

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-psyllid31-2009oct31,0,5594649.story

Asian citrus psyllid nears California growing center
The citrus pest, which has wreaked havoc elsewhere, is found in rural San Diego County. A high concentration of organic farmers in the area complicates efforts to control the insect.

Oh…  I remembered that the almonds would be raw, and apparently misremembered that they would be organic.

I’d grow organic almonds - the econometrics doesn’t pencil.  You give up more than half of your production (insect pressures) and you lose another 20-50% in adjustments for quality issues in processing (split nuts, chips, and insect damage).  You could net more dollars/acre before the organic market collapsed (just like it did in all the other crops) but not today and not anytime soon.  I’d like to grow two or three acres as a test plot 100% organic just for the learning experience.  I’d be unwilling to gamble the whole crop on it because it takes several years to get certified organic, and the costs to get there are very high.

Speaking of organic: anybody see the CNBC special “Marijuana, Inc”?  I have a hard time watching it because 1) growing pot isn’t that hard if you can get it out of a closet and 2) I have never ever ever burned (not even a cigarette) and 3) that’s a lot of money man!

Stories like this one in the LAT make “Mr. Squeaky Clean” consider that he’s just been a moron for the past three decades.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-fi-dope-county1-2009nov01,0,6540031.story

Education has long been preached as a way to keep kids away from drugs. It’s the walk to school that has Supt. Tom Barnett worried.

This hardscrabble Northern California town has become a hotbed for medical marijuana farming. Kids stroll much of the year past pungent plants flourishing in gardens and alleys. The red-and-black clad Timberjacks football team moved its halftime huddle on a recent Friday night to avoid the odor of marijuana smoke wafting over the gridiron from nearby houses. Some students talk openly of farming pot after graduation, about the only opportunity in this depressed timber town.

“It’s not a subculture here,” said Barnett, who heads the Mountain Valley Unified School District. “Marijuana is drying in their houses. It’s falling out of their pockets.”

I hear that high grade stuff is worth $400 an ounce (okay, I had to make a phone call).  For a while you could legally hold 3 pounds of dried stuff, 12 mature plants, and 24 immature plants for “personal use”.  $14,400 in bud for in personal use…

[Bill Cosby]“Personal use.  RIGHT.’[/Bill Cosby]

Since this is the IHB, and we are housing related, look at these stats:

Estimated median household income in 2007: $33,118 (it was $22,824 in 2000)
Hayfork:    $33,118
California: $59,948

Estimated per capita income in 2007: $18,964
Hayfork:    $18,964
Califonia:  $28,678

Estimated median house or condo value in 2007: $223,679 (it was $80,800 in 2000)
Hayfork:    $223,679
California: $532,300

Keep in mind, the last industry in this town was logging, and that’s now gone.  I’m a horrible gambler.  Without being too obtuse, I missed this gravy train too.

Have you looked into what it would take to become a licensed grower? Eric Holder’s already put the word out that the Medical Marijuana Industry isn’t going to be targeted by the Feds in states where it’s been legalized. I would think that an established farm would produce better plants than the hydroponic systems or the backyard planters. Just wear gloves during harvest time wink

It depends on where you are.  I doubt you’ll be able to get any cover of any sort in any county I’d consider growing, and I’m not considering it.  I’m just too damn square.

And you’re right - once the real producers get after this, the margins are going right out the window.

Now that is ironic. A conservative, me, all for legalization of drugs and domestic production and here you are… too straight-laced to try it. I’m chuckling, thanks.

Hey No_Vas, what’s going on in King’s County?  I opened my e-mail today to see that the DA’s office is hiring like gang busters (so to speak), including some high level positions.  Was there a purge of some sort, or did they get some stimulus money to move all the poor people from the welfare budget to the jail budget?

Don’t know.  I called my mom (my uncle is a former DA in that county) and she didn’t know anything (my mom has all the juicy reliable gossip), but she said she’d ask my uncle.

He’s much more “straight laced” than anyone would think. Not a bad thing, just somewhat unexpected.

No way.  You know how much slack capacity there is out there?  If those guys have demand, we can certainly accomodate the supply side.

Anybody remember when I was poo-pooing organics?

http://www.cattlenetwork.com/Large-Cattle-Producer-Told-To-Stop-Organic-Operation/2009-12-03/Article.aspx?oid=963910

An investigation of an organic dairy in Colorado led to the suspension of one of the largest organic dairy cattle producers based outside St. Louis, Mo. according to StLToday.com.

Promiseland Livestock LLC., refused to share records with the USDA showing they were complying with organic rules. Promiseland was previously under scrutiny by organic watchdog groups who claimed the livestock company was not following organic practices. Promiseland is located in Falcon, Mo. and sells dairy cattle to organic dairies among which have deals with Target, Wal-Mart and Schnucks.

The USDA questioned Promiseland when they discovered the company was providing the organic dairy in Colorado with cattle that did not meet organic rules. Promiseland refused the USDA on multiple occasions since 2007 to share records. Without the records proving Promiseland was following organic rules, a federal administrative law judge in Washington made the decision to suspend Promiseland of its organic label.
