With train tracks, blimp hangars, poor schools (at least for now), and a relatively unremarkable neighborhood, I don’t think I’d ever live there.
Those blimp hangars are an icon.

That’s one ugly sign.

I know some retired train conductors that are comforted by the train whistles and loud rumbling. They love the Gables…

I have to disagree with ipoplaya (hopefully, I don’t get kicked out of the fan club =)
I live in the Gables. Train noise is definitely NOT an issue. You cannot hear it in your house and I’ve probably only noticed it at all a handful of times since I moved in last fall. Friendly neighborhood.
I’m renting and don’t have school-aged kids, so I haven’t bothered to look into the school situation.

So if your windows are open on a balmy summer night you can’t hear the large locomotive going by five hundred feet away and yet I can from my bedroom 2 miles to the north?
Uppercut, I respectfully submit that you need to look into this.
I think different people have different tolerances. It’s probably not an issue for many. Personally, if I dropping big coin and buying an SFR to have a yard to enjoy, I don’t want the annoyance of a passing train or speeding cars… It’s more an issue of value for me. I want to have a built-in BBQ and a flat screen out back. Don’t want my Laker game watching disturbed by Thomas the Tank Engine.

The current school situation sucks, i.e. old and low-performing TUSD schools. When they get around to building and opening the new TUSD schools targeted for the area, the situation will likely improve considerably.

Lol i like this forum. You guys are funny. Thanks for the feedback. Anyone want to comment on growing an extra limb given all the toxic waste and contamination by the army? The more I think about it, the less I want to live in Columbus Square…just too many risks. And the prices are still not reflecting all the concerns. Does anyone like Plan 1?

Okay, you can rest assured what contaminates there are, it will be taken care of. It was blimp storage, not the manhattan project. There’s also a gambit of tests the soil samples have to pass before it’d used.

These questions were addressed in 2007. Scroll to the bottom and you can see that the State has to approve the school sites. If the schools aren’t built because of the state, then there might be a problem with the soil? Anyways, the tests are ongoing… so you cannot say for sure that the contamination is or is not at acceptable levels. I would guess that there are lots of special interests here at work! But, the site also says that most of the contaminates are of engine cleaners, landfill, etc. The NAVY, DTSC, EPA groups are looking at the soil, whatever that means…
Having said all this, I would still buy here because we’re probably getting contaminated by something already!

If there is a soil contamination issue, rest assured, the VoC homeowners have won the lottery and their ticket out of their own financial mess.
Good catch padre! How is it possible that someone is selling the model? Aren’t these currently on lease back with the developer? There’s gotta be a clause in their contract that prevents them from doing this

Oh, wow. The models going up on mls = the fat lady singing for your development. Add another OC subdivision to the another one bites the dust list.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire. This owner’s billing address is in Ladera Ranch. ouch.

An email i received! Looks like they want to get rid of inventory…prices are down so much! I decided not to submit an offer because I’m still unsure of the train and the contamination (call me paranoid, but i’d rather be safe than sorry)

I question not being able to hear the train horn at night. I’ve slept with my windows open, and I can hear train horns around 10:30 PM or 7:00 AM and I live on the other side in Camden. The train noise is only an issue when I leave my bedroom window open, besides my neighbor watching porn in his bedroom at full volume with his windows open, of course.

i’m waiting for one of those plan 4s to come on the market. i know some of the architecture and design buffs think that model is a monstrosity, but that’s what makes it great. the thing is just a massive, boxy, hot mess of your typical mcmansion accouterments. i want to take a gables plan 4 and just plop one down on an ocean view lot in corona del mar. that’d be my dream.

bkshopr would be so proud…
