Nope…  I met Ms. IPO for the first time at Moose McGillycuddy’s in Old Town Pas.  I was a decade removed from my HS prom.  We are one of the few successful bar meeting marriages.  There is indeed hope for Ten!

My mom kept them, as this girl was her favorite until I met my future wife, and all the old pics made their way to my place after my mom passed.  I just saw them again when we cleared out our garage storage cubby during the move…

My brother and I went to Q’s all the time.
We grew up in the area.
What were you doing over there?
Searching for your dignity or did you work as a bar back at Moose’s?

I’ll finally give you credit for one thing Ipop.
I was proud to read that you exercised the entitlement mentality while meeting your future wife there.

I lived in Pasadena for a couple of years and also Glendale for a year.  The commute to DT LA was great from both locations.  I was an Old Town regular…  I used to shoot some stick at Q’s as well.  Also down at Jake’s, which is definitely not a meet-the-ladies kind of joint, but a great place to drink with the fellas.  I got bounced out of the 35er on one glorious occassion.  Equator, no idea if its still around, was a great place to hang and meet people.  Good coffee too.  Still like to dine on the patio at Cafe Santorini when I am in the area although its been a couple of years…

We went to Gordon Biersch all the time.

Do you remember Old Town Pasadena before it became the hang out place or you do not remenber because the carseat was blocking your view out the car window?

It was where Robert Reed (Mr. Brady) picked up boys and contracted AIDS.
My friend who owned a Pharmacy by the Huntington Hospital sold medication to him during that time and kept the secret from the media for a long time.

Between Fairoaks and the freeway where drug abusers boys and girls along the back alley doing drugs and selling their body.

Porn and pawn shops lined both sides of Colorado Blvd and one did survive till the present day but the city imposed a friendlier storefront ambiance with soft-core displays visible from the sidewalk.

Muggings and robberies were common and the police did really nothing because the population there was homeless and wasted.

Victor Gruen, a well known LA based retail mall architect design a first enclosed shopping mall (better climate control due to bad weather) in the Midwest during the 50’s. It was a smashing success and every mall developer followed the mall formula to the present days. It was however a shame for Southern California with excellent outdoor climate to have the indoor malls. The Plaza Colorado was an indoor mall built during the early 70’s by his disciple Charles Kober as a result from a design competition. The axis that link the Pasadena city hall to the Civic Auditorium on Green Street was interrupted by the mall location so the winning proposal was the creation of a glassed-in entrance plaza that could be access from Colorado and Green Street thus maintaining the pedestrian connection and visual continuity. The biggest problem was the glass was reflective and nobody could see the Civic Auditorium from Colorado and vice versa see the City Hall from Green Street.

All the businesses left the decaying downtown location and flocked into the mall. The mall ruined Old Town. When Old Town was revitalized the indoor mall died because shoppers and pedestrian preferred the outdoor and plenty of activities to do and see after 9pm (mall hours).

The current Paseo Colorado was a valiant effort in creating a better outdoor environment for the shoppers and pedestrian but lacks the element of voyeurism “to be seen” by motor traffic. The visual attention is what the pedestrians like and women do dress up for the occasion. All that effort walking several blocks from the parking garage to the restaurants women in their heels like the attention of the congested traffic in Old Town.

I applaud the City of Pasadena for their effort of redevelopment in forcing out the bad elements and recycling old structures. As a result property value went way up and it became a place where I want to live, play and hang out.

We will continue to derail Ipo’s thread until his escrow closed and a check in hand. When he finally post the selling price then we will end our hi-jack.

This reminds me of the Fulton Mall in Fresno.

So Le Sex Shoppe is still there?  Good for them…  Crown City is a great pawn shop although it doesn’t have the dark and seedy feel you want from a good pawn.

It is all vacant and only Goodwill thrift shop as the anchor tenant. It is desolate there. I agree with you the Northern strip of Fresno is great. The newer section called Riverpark was just added several months ago. It is the best REI interior and a ourdoor farmers market along the plaza. I would not recommend the PF Chang there because I waited 2 hr. for my food.

I can remember playing in the Fulton Mall common areas in the early 1970’s while my mom shopped.  Unattended.  By the late 1970s that had changed.  In the course of like 12 months all the anchors left - replaced by homeless people.  Back then we called them bums.  I remember seeing homeless there for the first time outside of SF on one of our last trips there. 

Retailers headed north to Manchester Center on Shields and the brand new Fashion Fair on Shaw.  By the early 1990s, Manchester Center was seeing the same decay caused by the exidous of the anchors - this time to Sierra Vista in Clovis and an expansion of Fashion Fair. 

River Park opened in the late 1990’s.  Frankly, it’s across in the the nicest neighborhoods in Fresno proper (the homes around Woodward Park are lovely).  They’ve continued to expand it, apparently.  Fashion Fair is apparently now the newest Fresno “Scab Mall”, once again suffering from that Northern track of Urban Sprawl.

On a positive note, Fresno has now ran up against the San Joaquin river and can no longer develop North.
