If anybody caught the 650 lb. Virgin specials on TLC (a follow-up aired last night), the man featured who lost 400 lbs., David, and his personal trainer, Chris, have a Youtube channel here. I love their videos as they give some really excellent tips. Chris is extremely energetic so he’s fun to watch. They seem to upload a new video just about every day so that’s pretty nice. Their daily topics run the gamut on fitness and health-related questions, including demonstrations.

I was wondering if there are any health experts or doctors on IHB who can shed some light on having a fatty liver.

I just a annual check up with my doctor and he told me that i have a fatty liver and told me that i should come back to see him in about three months to do some blood testing and ultra sound. I was a little concerned after hearing this. My wife is extremely concerned. I’m thinking this a result of my love for meat (bulgogi and kalbi) and sugar in my coffee. Is having a symptom of a fatty liver dangerous? Should I be worried? Should i completely eliminate meat and sugar from my diet and become a vegetarian? What can i do to have a healthier liver? I know my father struggled with diabetes and it may run in our family blood.

I would appreciate any advice.

Very interesting article.

Bacteria/microbes make you fat?

If you read towards the bottom, even the mice on the healthy, low fat diet in the control group gained weight by transplantation of the bacteria alone, keeping on the same diet. I think I smell weight-loss antibiotics around the corner.

I found a website I absolutely love and wanted to share with anyone who would like it.

In September, I was looking for a site that would help me in analyzing nutrition / BMI, etc. I found this site: fitday.com

It is free to create an account. The portal has many diffferent tabs taking you to various pages. Here is what it offers:

- A daily food log so you can take inventory of everything that goes in your mouth. It comes pre-programmed with many different foods and their calories & nutrtional values. There are even many brand-name prepackaged foods already in the system. If you don’t find something that matches what you are eating, you can customize a food label. I eat a lot of the same things so I do that and then it remembers what you put in so it’s easy to select it again from a drop-down list of recent things you ate. I think it is fun to see your caloric intake add up. I start seeing it as a “numbers game” and it makes me feel competitive, trying to beat the bar chart that it gives you to come in at or under your goal.

- Activities log so you put in what your activities for the day were and it shows how many calories you have burned. It works similarly to the food log.

- Weight & Weight Goal tabs. Charts, graphs, calorie balance reports, it’s got them all. If you have a specific weight goal in mind, it does all the math for you, showing you what your caloric restriction must be each day to reach your goal. (This is based on your weight, height, gender, age, and activity level that you would have entered in your profile when you registered and you can change that at any time.) This makes it very easy to stay on track.

- A calendar, stats, and a reports tab. For people who like seeing information set up in report format (and I think we all do here), this is really cool. There is a chart showing how much of the recommended daily allowance of each vitamin you get on average so if you have any deficiencies, it is very easy to find out.

- An overview. This is the main page. It grabs info from the other tabs and displays it at a glance. It is easy to keep track of how you are doing.

- You can even chart your mood and it has a diary feature. I don’t really use those. I know it sounds like a lot to keep track of but it really isn’t. You can make it as simple or as complicated as you want.

Anyway, I wanted to post about it when I found it, but I don’t like to recommend something until I have investigated it well. I credit this site for a 15 pound loss since I started using it, so I can absolutely say I think it’s worth a try. Like I said, it’s free to use the site. They do offer a PC version for a fee, but I think I prefer the site version because then you can use it no matter where you are - work, home, etc. and not wait until you get home to enter your info for that day. If any of you try it or have a question, let me know!

Hi there!
We just moved to Irvine from MA. Our kids used to ride horses at a local farm back home and had tons of fun. After moving here, they definitely wanted to continue with the riding , but all the places we have tried so far are very structured, goal-oriented businesses. My kids really miss the experience of just enjoying being close to horses in a more natural environment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Hi, fellow IHBers! Just in case you had some free time this Saturday, September 12, you might want to check out the great park for a nice, non-competitive 5k walk.

There are no fees to enter. You’re not even required to make a donation. Your participation in the walk is one step towards their goal of making people in the US more conscious of their hearts’ health.

A whole bunch of the proceed goes toward public health education, and about 21% of the American Heart Association’s expenditures are on research. So every little dollar counts in their goal to advocate better health.

(Sidebar: I’m not an AHA employee, but I’ll be at the walk)

Bring your four-legged buddies, as well! Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome to walk with their humans. Bring your entire posse, too!

The event starts at 9, registration starts as early as 7. Visit their website for more details. Hope to see you guys there!

Zovall gave me the link to some activities you can participate in Irvine. I signed up for a photography class and a pilates class. Today was my first class and I can tell already that Im really going to enjoy it.

I stood up at the end my neck and back sort of cracked and I can tell I will be sore tomorrow. But I feel great. I lived in Irvine for 5 years and never took any of these classes. If you can find something that interests you I suggest you give it a try! They seem really worth it! But I might need a nap.
